Procrastination is the habit of delaying things that need immediate attention. In simple words, it’s not being able to do what you need to do. It’s like being stuck in a spider’s web, you know you need to get out of it, you want to break away, but you struggle to do so.
Before I go ahead, I like to point out, let’s not mix passive and laid back attitude and procrastination. The former don’t want to do anything, and seem okay with that. No significant urgency for action of any sort. The latter want to make a difference in their lives, flourish and get things done, but somehow find it tough to move out of the web.
Procrastination is one of the hurdles that prevent us from making our visions and dreams real.
It creates guilt, regret and frustration in people. They divert their attention to the things they haven’t done or achieved, and their weaknesses, rather than actually focusing on the things they have completed, achieved, no matter how big or small they are. When we delay, waste time consciously or subconsciously, we notice opportunities slip through our hands. We fail to reach our maximum potential.
Often when we procrastinate, the question that pops into our mind is…
I wish I could concentrate so I can use my time to create something that matters to me?
I wish I could optimise my potential and shine?
I wish I could give my 100% to this project?’’
So, a few of the many reasons why you procrastinate…
- You are fearful, the inner critic is loud
- You are tired- fatigued – your brain is on holiday mode
- You are overwhelmed – everything seems super critical – work and the things to do start piling up
- You like being in control of everything 24/7. Your way or the highway. You get shaken if things do not go as per plan.
- You believe in Perfectionism – this makes you stop before you even start
- You do not respect or value your time – there is always a tomorrow attitude
Simply, you find it to break away from certain behaviour patterns and habits that pull you back from reaching your goals.
Now, a few of the many ways to cope…
- When you have small manageable targets for yourself, you feel good and proud of yourself. This releases dopamine, which makes you feel wonderful.
- Make a daily to do list with only 2 to 3 things that are significant to you for that day.
- Do not define your worth to your outcomes.
- Change is momentous, even if it may not be what you want. Acceptance is the key here
- Fresh air and exercise gives you headspace
- Mediation keeps you balanced and less anxious
- Proper sleep routine
- Slow down, pause & breathe. Take two steps back if you need too.
- You have nothing to prove or justify to anyone
So, don’t give up try,retry and go on trying till you find a system,method,techinique that supports you to cope with procrastinating and postponing important and not so too things in your life!
